Silliman
University is one of the Board of Directors of the
Philippine Association of Tertiary Level Educational
Institutions in Environmental Protection and Management
(PATLEPAM) that took charge of the review and drafting
of a new specialized curriculum for the Citizens
Training Welfare Service (CTWS) of the National Service
Training Program (NSTP). This new curriculum is aimed
at environmental awareness and protection.
Named
Environment Conservation through Citizens Organized
Participation and Support (ECO-CORPS), the curriculum
offers a course that will "instill in the ECO-CORPS
participants the value of the environment and solicit
their involvement in addressing environmental problems."
The course involves lectures, video presentations,
and actual immersion in communities for students to
have a first-hand observation and experience of an
environmental concern.
The
new curriculum will be pilot-tested in six schools
across the country: Pamantasan ng Lunsod ng Maynila,
University of Santo Tomas, Philippine School of Business
Administration, New Era University, Rizal Technological
University, and AMA Computer Learning Center. In preparation,
five instructors from each of the pilot institutions
will attend a trainors training from March 30
to April 2 in Manila.
Silliman
and the rest of the schools in the country will start
implementing the specialized curriculum next school
year, 2004-2005, after the pilot testing proves successful.
According
to Silliman Presidential Assistant for Special Projects
Dr. Christopher Ablan, PATLEPAM came up with the curriculum
because of the absence of a specific program that
enables students to take part in community work for
the environment. He said this will help students be
abreast with environmental issues, and hopefully inspire
them to do their share in environmental protection
and conservation.
The
PATLEPAM is composed of a number of academic institutions
around the country. Also sitting as ex officio members
are representatives from the Department of Environment
and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Commission on
Higher Education (CHED).
