THE
MANILA regional trial court (RTC) on Wednesday handed down
the death penalty to a student of the University of Santo
Tomas (UST), over the murder of fellow student Mark Wilson
Chua in 2001, GMA Network's radio station dzBB reported.
The
convict was identified as Arnulfo Apari Jr., a reserve officer
training corps (ROTC) officer, who had surrendered to police,
the report said.
Three other ROTC officers, who were also accused of the killing
are still at large. They are Michael Paul Reinard Managbao,
Paul Joseph Tan, and Eduardo Travilla.
"We're
very happy. This sets a precedent for the three others, so
they will be convicted too," the victim's father, Welson
Chua, told dzBB radio after Judge Romulo Lopez's decision
was read.
Chua's
remains were found in the Pasig River in March 2001. Before
his death, he exposed alleged anomalies in the ROTC in his
school paper.
