The
Ateneo officer's sash was the brainchild of First
Lieutenant Onesimo
C. Banaga, AdDU-CMT Commandant for School Year
1989 - 1990. Lieutenant Banaga, a Philippine Military
Academy graduate, drew inspiration from his alma mater's
sash, but was keen to use distinctively local materials.
Its was used officially for the first time on October
1, 1989 -- during the 4th
Presentation of Sponsors.
The
sash was originally intended to be worn during formal
parades -- however during combined unit parades other
sashless units decried the lack of uniformity, and
compelled the Ateneo to refrain from using the sash
during inter-unit events. Interestingly however,
the same units who objected to the sash, adopted their
own the following year.
The
sash endures as one of the unit's more resilient unit
icons.
