When
the Ateneo de Davao College opened in 1951,
it did not have an ROTC unit of its own. Its
students underwent mandatory reservist training
under the Rizal Memorial College (RMC) ROTC
unit. For a time, Ateneans served as officers
under the RMC banner. This state of affairs,
however, that did not sit well with members
of the Ateneo training staff.
As
related by then lieutenant Ricardo Roquillo --
the unit's first assistant commandant -- it was believed that the quality of the individual members of
the cadet corps justified the creation of an independent unit. The unit staff felt that the school
could, and should, run its own unit.
Four
years after the affiliation with RMC. . . the
Atenean Corps got what it wanted.
This
is the story of what happened next.
