True,
But Unsung Heroes
by Fr. Jose S. Arcilla, S.J. (Professor
of History, Ateneo de Manila)
Taken
from an article on http://www.iknowcentral.com/articles/arcilla/print.htm.
.
. . President Quezon had ordered all ROTC units disbanded
when the war began (Editor: This is in reference to
World War II). But the Ateneo ROTC sought exemption
from the presidential order, on condition that they
serve together as a unit. In Bataan, other military
units initially ridiculed them because at the end
of the day, they came together to pray the Rosary.
One day, they had only enough clean water to slake
their thirst. One of the Ateneo boys, however, heard
a soldier shouting for something to slake his thirst.
Without hesitation, the Atenean offered him his last
glass of water. This won the respect for the Ateneo
ROTC cadets facing a real enemy too close for comfort.
