SU-ROTC Marks 87.9% in Annual Tactical Inspection, First in Region

The SU NetNEWS volume Five number 44
Thursday, December 23, 1999

The Silliman University Reserved Officer Training Corps Unit (SUROTC-U) completed the Region VII Annual Administrative and Tactical Inspection last December 10 with a rating of 87.903. The rating is 2.107 points short of last year's mark, but enough to make the unit number one in the region. In a radio communication from the 7th Regional Community Defense Group in Cebu, Silliman bested Divine World College and the University of Bohol, both in Tagbilaran, which placed second and third, respectively.

If the SU ROTC Unit is officially declared as the over-all No. 1 unit in the region by the 7thRCDG, it will represent Region VII in the National Annual Administrative and Tactical Inspection next year.

The unit rated high in the administrative aspect of the inspection, garnering 28 points out of a possible 30. According to P2Lt. Reu D. Ismil, secretary of the unit, he attributed their high performance on the preparedness of the unit. He added that the cooperation given to them (ROTC Administration) by the members of the Headquarters Company also made their preparations a success. Brigade Adjutant Cdt. Lt. Col. Leonardo Garcia commented that the team spirit and the aspiration to be No. 1 which prevailed among the cadets also had a great effect on the result of the inspection.

SU performed well in the other criteria except in the Military Stakes which included First Aid. SUROTC Unit Corps Commander Cdt. Col. Jake Mitchell Consing declared that the ones chosen to take the test were not the ones trained. "They (cadets) were selected at random," Consing said. SU ROTC-U Assistant Commandant Capt. Rafael Crescencio Tan Jr. (RES) PA said that they lacked tactical officers to train the unit and that they were stressed out and tired. The tactical inspection was held December 10, during closed week. The university preliminary exams were held December 13 to 17.

A total of seven military officers from the region comprised the team of tactical inspectors with Lt. Col. Benjamin J. Marchan (INF) PA as chairperson and Captain Victorico Mediante (INF) PA as vice-chairperson. Both Marchan and Mediante were former commandants of the SU ROTC Unit before Major Delfin H. Fernandez (INF) PA took over last school year.
