Prayer rally for UP killing

Excerpt from an article published in the Manila Bulletin; February 23, 1999

Meanwhile, officials of Trinity College of Quezon City (TQCC) suspended the suspects in the hazing of a stepson of radio journalist Lito Villarosa and another student who are taking an advance course of the Reserved Officers Training Corps (ROTC).

The victims suffered severe hazing early this month and told school auhorities of their ordeal. The parents of the victims have also asked the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) to investigate the matter.

Remedios Rosal, TCQC dean of the Center for Student Services (CSS), identified the victims as Jacqueson Dalire Jr., a stepson of Villarosa, and Jose Antonio Balingit. They are first year students taking up BS Computer Science at the school's College of Arts and Sciences.

Suspects in the hazing of Dalire were TCQC ROTC Corps Commander James Cruz and his deputy Julius Zamora.

Commissioner Bernardo J. Mitra of the National Youth Commission (NYC) said the continued practice of hazing is due to pressure inflicted by both members and alumni of fraternities on the present leadership of a fraternity or sorority.
