THE UNIVERSITY of Mindanao Department of Military Science and Tactics’ Presentation of Sponsor was successfully held last October 8, at the UM Matina sprawling campus. It was a sunny early moring when the UM ROTC Corps of Cadets and Cadettes assembled in front of the gym while guests and friends were starting to arrived. This year’s presentation of sponsors and escorts’ program commenced with Rev. Fr. Rico Enriquez, UM Chaplain’s heart-warming invocation. Cpt. Walter A. Somozo (Res) PA, Assistant Commandant of the UM ROTC Unit, gave the welcome address. Attention Call, Adjutants Call, and Formation of Troops followed. The Philippine National Anthem and the University of Mindanao Hymn were played by the UM Band. Then, Trooping of the Line, Manual of Arms, and Report followed.

The Presentation of Sponsors and Escorts was the highlight of the activity. This year’s Corp of Sponsor is Ms. Jalyn M. Lu. Ms. Espie Chinel Aparis, Dean of Sponsors and Escorts of the UM ROTC Unit for the last thirteen years have successfully trained this year’s sponsors and escorts to become responsible and one of the role-models of UM students. Publishing of Orders, Officers Center, Reading of Orders by MSg Nelson F. Fuggan (Inf) PA, Pinning of Sponsors and Escorts, Presentation of Sponsors and Escorts to the Corps of Cadets, and Assumption of Responsibility by the Corp Sponsor came after.

The message from Col. Franklin C. Estrada INF (GSC) PA, Group Commander, 11 RCDG, ARESCOM, added more substance to the activity. Then, the most important part of the presentation of sponsor, the address of the Guest of Honor and Speaker, Mr. Pedro B. San Jose, University of Mindanoa’s Executive Vice-President for Academic Affairs. Mr. San Jose was introduced by the Commandant of the UM ROTC Unit, LTC Lauro I. Rivera Jr. (CAV) PA.

Mr. San Jose talked that young officers are known to be trained in order to be involved in good governance in propagating and exemplifying the values of honesty, duty and conscience throughout the entire breadth of the military and civil service. He said, “These numerous roles play profound challenge upon the intellectual, moral and spiritual resources of men in uniform. The willingness to fight for what is right, discipline to stay on course and the ability to discern good from evil are the important facets of men.” He wrapped-up by telling this to the young cadet officers, “Truly, you are the bedrock of character and values and the fortress of human excellence especially with the presence of your loved ones who will be able to support you in the attainment of your dreams.”

The Pass in Review followed after the inspiring message of Mr. San Jose, Which ended the Presentation of Sponsors and Escorts 2003. MSg Daniel Kimpo (Res) PA and MSg Christian Ruiz (Res) PA, the masters of ceremonies, steered smoothly the successful event of the University of Mindanao ROTC Unit.
