ROTC in the Ateneo > The Unit > The Office

The original office

When the Ateneo de Davao ROTC unit was opened in 1955, it was given the requisite facilities -- including the office / armory shown on the left. It was situated where the present day Weiman building is currently erected, as shown below in the red circle; Canisius hall is in the foreground.

The office, referred to either as the armory, or simply the "ROTC hut", had three sections: the commandant's office, the armory, and the band room -- when the Ateneo still had a band.

ROTC units of the period were provided with firing pinless, but authentic, rifles. These were housed in the unit's armory; situated in the middle of the building. The main doors to the armory are shown in the picture to the right. Note the steel bars that were necessary to secure the arsenal contained within.

This structure was home to the Ateneo de Davao ROTC unit for twenty-two (22) years -- until it was transferrred to the present location in 1977.

For a time it was used as the headquarters of the 123rd Home Defense Unit, and its armory used for storage of the weapons of the Davao City Standby Battalion.

The building was destroyed in 1978.
