He is regarded as the first Ateneo Advance ROTC cadet officer to join the Philippine Navy Marines. He joined the said corps in 1975, and was later integrated in the PMA Class of 1977.

His roster of postings include the islands of Jolo, Tawi-tawi and the Kalayaan Group. As of 1992, he held the rank of Captain, and was Assistant Chief of Naval District Staff for Personnel (D1), Training (D8), and Inspector General for Naval District VII, headquartered at Panacan, Davao City.
